About Pinnawela:
Don't be shocked to see baby elephants being bottle fed or roaming freely on the 25-acre coconut property, since they pose no threat to anyone. Seeing how these kind giants, who are sometimes three-legged and orphaned, are cared for at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage since 1975 is, quite appropriately, a heartwarming sight. It is astonishing to learn that some of its convicts have even seen their grandchildren over the past few decades, and more than 20 calves have been born here to date! For an experience that cannot be seen anywhere else on the planet, watch them eat at 9:15 am, 1:15 pm, and 5:00 pm, then bathe in the river twice a day at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, respectively!
